Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to 2000's 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' with Jim Carrey expected to return as the Grinch and Ron Howard as director. The script is being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, all 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' veterans who also worked on the 2003 'Cat in the Hat' adaptation.
This reunites the core creative team from the original film, which earned over $350 million at the box office in 2000. Carrey has previously said he'd be open to returning if the intensive makeup process could be replaced with motion capture technology, suggesting the production approach may differ from the prosthetics-heavy original.
Carrey told ComicBook.com in 2024 that he wants to use motion capture for any Grinch sequel instead of the prosthetic makeup that made it hard for him to breathe during the original shoot.
