Jason Clarke has closed a deal to join Supermax, the new action-thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax. He is the second cast addition this week, following Jaafar Jackson, and will play opposite Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb as FBI agents investigating a murder inside a maximum-security prison. David Gordon Green directs from a script by David Weil and David J. Rosen.
It is a starry package pairing an A-list lead with a director coming off a run of buzzy horror and drama work, and it puts fresh weight behind Amazon MGM's push into mid-budget adult thrillers. It is also another data point on whether Will Smith's post-comeback slate can carry a hard-R crime picture without a franchise safety net.
Jason Clarke has now been in prison movies four times (Chappaquiddick, Everest, Zero Dark Thirty, and Winchester all involve confinement plots), which either means his agent has a type or the guy just really commits to a hallway.
